There's really not much to say about this film as it is an extremely mediocre and boring piece of supernatural horror. This thing is awful as a period piece and mediocre as a supernatural horror film. Some strong folk horror elements and bits of psychological horror quickly become a snooze fest due to poor storytelling. There are some decent moments peppered throughout like the creature looks decent as far as indie horror goes and the deaths are surprisingly gruesome, but as a whole this film rarely impresses on anything other than a mediocre level. I wasn’t overly emotionally invested either, since characters are a bit too one-dimensional and offer little to zero chemistry or charisma. Skip this and watch The Cursed (2022) instead. That film captures the time period better, delivers on the dread, suspense, or horror much more effective, and the creature looks decent as well.

i was really into edgar allen poe when i was a teenager, so i was excited to watch this and really wanted to love it, but something about it felt off. it has got some major sleepy hollow vibes going on throughout but unfortunately, it wasn't anywhere near as good. it was nice seeing peter from narnia though.

This one just didn't click with me, it was benign. Lacked a soul.
Best thing it had going for it was setting and costumes.
* Didn't like the use of Edgar Poe as a character. Nothing about this character gave the impression this was a young Edgar Allen Poe.
* Didn't like the use of CGI. Looked out of place without realistic appearance.
* Was not spooky, nor scary. Felt like an after school special gone rouge. Showing gore, guts and entrails. Just seemed like it tried hard, and couldn't pull it off.
* Dialog between characters was highly dramatized. Which gave it a stage feel, but not a movie feel. -

I'm equal parts about enjoying this and being frustrated by it.. I liked the whole mood and look of it and the story was basically a whodunnit/mystery which was intriguing, plus a few decently bloody moments .. but when it came time to wrap it up things that needed more explanation lacked them.. ambiguity is ok but this just didnt make sense and I think certain reveals weren't clear enough in what they were getting at..

I went in expecting nothing and I got nothing unfortunately. This was well shot but I was bored throughout. I don't know why I feel like I have to watch every Shudder exclusive horror film lol. There was one bloody set pieces that I loved though.

Night #28 of Hooptober IX.
I really lowered my expectations a lot after seeing the reviews, but now I'm just confused? It can be a little drab and procedural in its presentation, but it's also moody and atmospheric and gruesome. The gore effects go pretty wild, though the color palette does rob it of some texture, and while I get that people want to come down on the CGI effects but it's a lower budget movie and the design is extremely rad, so who cares? I think it looks cool and I'm glad that they put it out there, and that the film nonetheless decides to remain ambiguous and bleak about the nature of the supernatural.
The whole actual Poe…

I would pay to watch Kate Dickie read a phone book aloud to a room full of cats and probably be more entertained than I was by this tedious slog. Poe wept!

Review by Wiccaburr ★★
Influenced by the poem from Edgar Allan Poe called The Raven, this folk horror mystery gave atmosphere but not a strong story to back up this movie.
The first half of this movie goes into folk mystery with a town holding a secret and Poe, along with his follow cadets, tried to solve the murder of a reverend. The second half, however...that goes into some heavy Poe related references and drug filled twisted imagery.
Those into Poe's writings will take notice of nods to The Tell Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. The effects were great in the way of gore and blood. The CGI though was a bit of a disappointment. The characters,…

It's not too bad. However, I'd have been more forgiving of this if it had been made for TV in the 70s and I was watching it on Youtube, for some reason.
